Practical tactics to improve your Flux Grid times, beat the optimal move count, and climb the leaderboard.
Read the grid before you swipe
The fastest players spend the first few seconds scanning, not tapping. Look for rare letters first — Q, X, Z, J — because they usually belong to one obvious word. Then scan for common endings like -ING, -ED, -ER, and -TION. Finding the longest word early often unlocks the rest of the board.
Plan your move order
Every tile you clear changes the shape of the board. Try to remove words in an order that leaves the remaining tiles connected and reachable. On Gravity Friday, tiles fall automatically after each clear, so think one step ahead: where will the letters land after this word disappears?
When to Compact
Compact is a free move that regroups scattered tiles. Use it when the remaining letters are spread across the edges of the board and you cannot form a clean path. Do not use it automatically — sometimes the gap is actually helping you see a word that spans the grid.
Spot four-letter stems
Most English words are built from short roots. Training your eye to spot stems like PLAY, TION, MENT, OVER, and UNDER will let you extend them into longer words faster than reading one letter at a time.
Use the hint penalty wisely
A hint adds 15 seconds once per puzzle. It is most valuable when you are stuck on the longest word and the rest of the board is already clear. Using it early, when several words are still hidden, usually wastes the advantage.
Beat the optimal move count
The Optimizers leaderboard celebrates players who finish in the fewest moves, not just the fastest time. To beat the optimal count, avoid partial submissions and look for the exact set of solution words. Sometimes one long word replaces two short ones.
Speed Streak discipline
Sub-30-second grids reward pattern recognition more than deep thinking. Warm up on a few daily puzzles first, then enter Speed Streak when your eyes are sharp. One slow decision ends the streak, so trust your first read.
Practice the weekly rhythm
Each day has a small twist: Wednesday puzzles use 3 or 5 words instead of 4, and Friday applies gravity after every clear. Notice the day and adjust. Gravity Friday rewards vertical thinking — words that drop tiles into new alignments.
